“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”
Isaiah 48:17

Golfers strive for a Grand Slam victory. The United States Open, the British Open, the Masters, and the PGA tournament make up the coveted crowns. In 1970, Lee Trevino vied for the lead in the British Open.

Trevino held a 3-stroke edge over Jack Nicklaus, Doug Sanders, and Tony Jacklin after three rounds. His 207 total put him in excellent shape for the final 18 holes.

But Trevino faltered badly in the first round. The crowning blow occurred on the fifth hole. The fifth green at historic St. Andrews houses two cups for two separate holes.

As the Texas golfer lined up his approach, he looked at the wrong flag. The ball landed 80 feet away from the correct pin. Trevino slapped his head in dismay at his costly mistake.

The errant shot resulted in a bogey on the hole. Trevino never recovered. Nicklaus and Sanders passed him on the leader board and tied after four rounds. The Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus, took the British Open in a playoff.

Lee Trevino lost sight of what was best for his golf game. He lacked direction in hitting his approach shot on the fifth hole. The golfer’s failure to focus cost him a possible championship with its prestige and prize money.

God is not a god of confusion. If we let Him control our lives, we move in the right direction. Our heavenly Father always leads us into what is best.
